The farmer whose land has been occupied by a native smoke shack says he'll bail the arrested operator out of jail today.

Stephen "Boots" Powless, 43, and three others -- including two of his sons -- were arrested yesterday morning at the Highway 6 property, just south of town. OPP had tried to evict the Ohsweken resident Tuesday from Ernie Palmer's farm but backed away when a reported 30 or more supporters of Powless arrived.

Powless, a well-known native activist, faces three charges -- including resisting arrest -- and is scheduled to appear in Cayuga court this morning. At his home just up the driveway from Powless' smoke shack, Palmer stressed last night he and Powless get along. He points to towers of Tim Hortons coffee cups in his garage to show the copious amounts of the beverage consumed between the pair during negotiations to have Powless remove the shop.

Powless argues the shop is on land Six Nations never legally surrendered in the 19th Century to colonial officials. No harsh words. There are now about half a dozen native smoke shops on land lining Highway 6, between Caledonia and Hagersville.

The individuals were removed from the site. It's long overdue. Last night, however, it was business at usual at the the shop. Customers came and went as Powless' sons ran the business.

One of his sons, who did not want to be identified, noted the issue was over land rights and said the shop will "definitely not" be moving now.

More than six weeks later, elected Chief Mark Hill says taking those extreme steps has been critical to stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus into one of Canada's most heavily populated First Nations.

The Six Nations of the Grand River declared its community emergency on March 13 and began restricting access to Iroquois Lodge the next day. Like municipalities across Ontario, the reserve shut schools, parks and other recreational facilities, and encouraged residents to work from home.

But on March 30 a third resident of Six Nations tested positive for COVID, prompting the emergency control group - a committee equally comprised of elected officials and traditional tribal elders - to restrict access to the reserve. That meant setting up checkpoints at eight of the 22 concession roads entering the territory and closing the rest. Residents were given vehicle ID badges with QR codes so police manning the checkpoints could easily scan them without having physical contact with the passengers.

For trucks bringing in food and other supplies, a work order or invoice has to be provided. All these steps were necessary to keep out the tens of thousands of visitors Hill says the territory gets for shopping and recreation. Getting the word out within the territory was itself a major task.

There are approximately 15, residents in the reserve - most of whom are Haudenosaunee, known in French as the Iroquois - clustered in smaller communities spread across more than square kilometres. Newsletters and fliers were distributed to every home, news releases were issued through the tribal council's website, and a daily briefing on Facebook has kept community members apprised of every step of the lockdown. We have been secluded in our homes, so continuing to put that support out there for the community is important.

There are currently no active cases in the territory. Hagersville, Ont. Wright says that like most Canadians, the people of the Six Nations of the Grand River are anxious to get back to normal life.
